Matthew Chua
BEng, PhD, CSM, PMP

Asst Prof. Matthew Chua is an Assistant Director of Data Science & Artificial Intelligence at the Ministry of Defence of Singapore and an Assistant Professor at NUS School of Medicine. At MINDEF, he leads a team of data scientists and partners with IT and Engineering teams to work closely with MINDEF/SAF stakeholders and external agencies to use data science to improve policy outcomes, service delivery and operational efficiency. As a technology leader, he spearheads and operationalize novel and state-of-the-art technologies and algorithms in the organization to transform MINDEF/SAF into a data-first organization. He has also won data science competitions at the national level, clinching 3rd place for the Data VIZard at the Data Arcade Tournament 2022. At NUS, he drives the research and lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Novel Technologies for the advancement of Medicine/Health. He has won prestigious research grants, amounting to more than S$1 million, from Ministry of Health, SG Enable, HealthTEC and internationally. He has also published more than 30 papers in prestigious peer-reviewed international journals and is widely cited. His wide array of expertise makes him a highly sought after collaborator from various industries. He actively fosters closer ties between MINDEF and NUS through education, research and collaboration.
On the side, he is a professional opera singer, being sought after for many local events and celebrations, including The SG50 Concert at the Park, Lee Kuan Yew Memorial Concert, TTSH Gala dinner and many others. He was also the 2nd place winner for The Rising Star Season 3 Competition 2019.
